Stars Over Alabama

Stars Over Alabama

We left Florida at 9:45 Eastern to begin westing towards California, with the night’s destination somewhere around Mobile Alabama, a 500 mile distance.

We decided that I would drive the morning tank of gas, Lisa the afternoon one, and I’ll finish off the day with the evening tank on account of having better night vision, and that come 2pm and my peepers think it’s siesta time.

Each tank takes us 175 miles, making the shifts a doable 3 hours long. After the morning tank I had a little more in me for another hour so we decided that, I would keep driving giving Lisa time to finish up some work.

Alabama Rest Stop

At the end of Lisa’s shift I started looking for our camping stop. As time went on, and the sun set, our options for places to stop started dwindling, even in terms of parking lots.

During the next gas station stop, determined not to spend anymore nights in parking lots, I was able to find and reserve a spot in Historic Blakely State Park just North of Mobile, Alabama. The problem was that check in ended at 7pm, and according to google maps, we wouldn’t make it there at least until 7:15.

Boy was Lisa surprised at the change in temperature when she sauntered out of the gas station restroom, from the time that she went in.

All of the sudden, it was all hands on deck, gogogo, chop chop let’s get moooving. Aruuuga. Aruuuga.

Google maps ETA seems to be based on average traffic speed, not your own average, and so it was excruciating to see our arrival time inch up later and later as we lumbered on with our below speed limit maximum speed.

We arrived a few minutes after check in. A nice lady came out and gave us a spot. Like, chill man.

It was a beautiful, remote, pull through site. Imagine if you had a remote half an acre of forest, reserved just for you.

It was dark, and the stars came out to greet us, before we tucked in for the night.
